George Blanda: Football Legend dead at 83. George Blanda -- Pro football Hall of Famer, who accumulated more than 2,000 points in his 26 year of career, died at the age of 83. He died of an illness which is not specified by the Oakland Raiders when they made the announcement on monday.
Blanda retired at the age of 43 in 1975, he was a quarterback who also played placekicker occasionally. He scored 2,002 points with 236 touchdown passes, during their battle against the Raiders, the Chicago Bears, Baltimore Colts and the Houston Oilers.
Blanda was an NFL Player of the Year in 1970. It was the time when a string of last-minute touchdown passes or field goals led to a string of Raiders wins and one tie in five straight games. Because of that he was once called "the greatest clutch player the game of pro football has ever known" by the Raiders owner Al Davis.
