New Specie of Monitor Lizard discovered in the Philippines. A new specie of monitor lizard has been discovered in the forested mountains of Sierra Madre, northern part of the Philippines. The giant lizard has been spotted in 2004 but it was only last year that the experts was able to determined it is a new specie. It is said to be a relative of the Komodo dragon—the world's largest lizard. The experts called their discovery as Varanus bitatawa which measures about 1.8 meters or more than six feet long. Almost the size of a tall Filipino!Although it may look scary, the giant monitor lizard only eat fruits and snails. It is one of only 3 fruit-eating monitor lizards in the world.
The biologists were surprised that such large and conspicuous lizard skipped the eyes of the many biologist who studied the area for the past 150 years? Experts said it was an "astonishing sets of circumstances". But the discovery isn't new at least in the eyes of the native inhabitants of Sierra Madre-Agta and Illonggo tribes known this animal for about a century now.
